2. Mastering the Basics: Stance and Balance

If you’re new to skating, your stance and posture play a crucial role in maintaining balance and preventing falls.

How to Stand Properly on Ice

  • Bend your knees slightly to lower your center of gravity.
  • Keep your arms out for balance—don’t keep them too close to your body.
  • Lean slightly forward to prevent falling backward, which is the most common mistake beginners make.

Finding Your Balance

  • Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart to maintain stability.
  • If you feel unsteady, march in place before attempting to glide.
  • If you start to lose balance, bend your knees more rather than stiffening up.
