4. How to Stop on Ice

Knowing how to stop is just as important as knowing how to start. There are a few effective stopping techniques:

Snowplow Stop (Beginner-Friendly)

  • Bend your knees slightly.
  • Point your toes inward and push your heels outward, forming a slight “V” shape.
  • Apply pressure to the inside edges of the skates until you slow down and stop.

Hockey Stop (For More Experienced Skaters)

  • Glide at a moderate speed.
  • Turn your hips and shoulders in the direction you want to stop.
  • Push out with one skate, using the inside edge to create friction, and come to a halt.
  • Practicing stops early on will help you feel more in control on the ice.
